Pope Francis I - his first words as the pope were to declare himself the Bishop of Rome and crack a lighthearted joke.
His message is one of love and brotherhood. He seems humble and pastoral. And to refer to himself as Bishop of Rome rather than pope illustrates a sense of brotherhood among the bishops of the world that places the papacy much in the way of patriarchs of the Eastern Church - first among equals.
So encouraging! He’s a Jesuit who has lived a life of poverty. Commentators are encouraging suggesting this might be a simpler papacy.
Personally excited… :)
